Frequently Asked Questions
“We’re awkward in front of the camera…” Can you help?Absolutely and honestly, almost every family says this before their session. The good news is you do not need to know how to pose. My approach to family photography is relaxed, playful, and connection-focused. I’ll gently guide you the entire time so nothing feels stiff or forced. Think more cuddles, tickles, walking, playing and laughing - less standing there wondering what to do with your hands.
What should we wear for our family photoshoot? The goal is to look like yourselves — just a little more elevated and coordinated. Neutral tones, earthy colours, soft textures and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully during outdoor family photography sessions.
A few tips:
Avoid neon colours and large logos
Coordinate rather than match exactly
Dress for comfort as well as style
Barefoot at the beach always works beautifully
I also provide a styling guide to help make choosing outfits easier (because I know dressing a whole family is basically an Olympic sport).
What if my kids don’t cooperate? That’s completely okay ~ truly. Children don’t need to sit still and smile perfectly for beautiful photos. Some of the most meaningful moments happen in between the “posed” ones.
Your session is designed to feel relaxed and child-led. We’ll play games, explore, cuddle, run around and embrace whatever season your family is in. Tiny chaos is welcome here.
When is the best time for a family photoshoot? The dreamiest light happens during golden hour — shortly before sunset. This soft glowy light is what gives those warm, natural tones you see in beautiful family portraits. Typically depending on the location & season, these times can vary.
Sunset sessions are especially popular for:
Beach family photography
Open field sessions
Candid family photos
Relaxed lifestyle family photography
Where do family photography sessions take place? There are so many beautiful locations for family photography in Melbourne. Whether you love the beach, open grassy fields, gardens, forest vibes or even cosy in-home sessions, we can choose a location that feels like you.
Some families love:
Sunset beach sessions
Nature-filled parklands
Cosy in-home lifestyle sessions
Dreamy golden fields
Urban city locations
I’m always happy to help recommend the perfect spot. In fact, once you book with me, you will receive an exclusive location list from me with visual examples.
How far in advance should we book?I recommend booking your family photography session at least 1-3 months in advance, especially during busy seasons like autumn, spring and Christmas mini sessions. Sunset weekend spots tend to book quickly.
If you have a specific date in mind, earlier is always best to ensure I have availability.
How long does a family photography session last? Most full family photo sessions run for around 30–90 minutes depending on the package and location. This gives us plenty of time for connection, movement, breaks for little ones, and capturing natural moments without feeling rushed.
Mini sessions are shorter and perfect for quick updated family portraits.
Longer sessions are ideal for newborns & extended family sessions in order to not be rushed.
Can grandparents/extended family or pets join?Absolutely. Extended family sessions are such a special way to document multiple generations together. Grandparents, cousins, siblings and the whole crew are always welcome in extended family photography sessions.
These sessions often become some of the most treasured images over time.
My only request is you must NOT select the “Flashback” package as 30 minutes as a mini offering is not suitable for this group of people.
What happens if it rains?Melbourne weather loves keeping us on our toes. If the weather is looking wild, we’ll simply reschedule to the next suitable date.
Cloudy weather can actually create really beautiful soft lighting for family portraits, so don’t stress if the forecast isn’t all sunshine.
My only real deal breakers are crazy high winds or thunderstorms with little kids, as it may not be wise or safe.
Do you help with posing?Definitely. I’ll guide you every step of the way with natural prompts that create genuine connection and emotion. You won’t be left wondering what to do.
My sessions focus on:
Genuine interaction
Natural movement
Connection over perfection
Real moments and emotion
The result? Photos that actually feel like your family.
How many photos will we receive? This depends on the collection package you choose, but every gallery includes professionally edited high-resolution images ready for download, printing and sharing.
Your final gallery will include a mix of:
Candid family moments
Relaxed posed portraits
Individual child portraits
Genuine connection and emotion
Here is a breakdown from the packages available:
Forever Collection: Expect 100+ digital photographs per session (ALL downloadable)
Memories Collection: 60 digital downloads
Reflections Collection: 30 digital downloads
Flashback Collection: 15 digital downloads
Additional images can be purchased individually or upgraded at an additional cost of $350 via the online store attached to your online gallery.
How long will it take to receive our gallery? You can typically expect your fully edited family photography gallery within 3–6 weeks depending on the season. I always know how exciting it is waiting to see your images, so I aim to deliver them as soon as possible while giving each gallery the care it deserves.
If the images are required urgently and you wish to jump the editing queue, you are always welcome to pay for a priority editing fee of $150.
What should we bring to our session?A few helpful things:
Non-messy healthy snacks for little ones
Water
A neutral blanket
Spare outfits for babies or toddlers (warm outfits for them to change into after is a lifesaver!)
Any sentimental items you’d love included - just give me a heads up!
Some toilet paper and rubbish bags to take our rubbish home too.
As long as all these things can fit into a backpack that I can easily carry in between shots. And most importantly — bring patience and a sense of fun. The magic usually happens in the beautifully imperfect moments.
Why invest in professional family photography?Because your children are growing faster than you realise. The little curls, missing teeth, chubby toddler cheeks and hands, belly laughs and cuddles deserve to be remembered too.
Professional family photography freezes these fleeting moments so you can hold onto this season of life long after it’s passed. These photos become part of your family’s story ~ memories your children will one day look back on and treasure.
How do I book a family photography session?Booking your family photoshoot is simple. Once you enquire through my website, I’ll send through all the session details including package information, available dates, location ideas, and what to expect. Your session is officially secured once the booking fee and signed contract are completed.
Just please note that I cannot hold any dates so if the contract & booking fee isn’t signed within 48 hours, I release that date back into the wild for another family to have first pickings. f
